AT&T 8525 Device Not Charging/Won't Stay Charged

The following steps will help you determine if it is your device, battery or charger that needs to be replaced. These are also the same troubleshooting steps that your wireless carrier should be asking you to perform before replacing any of the components so that they can be sure that the correct part is being replaced.

Check the battery level by going to Start>Settings>System Tab>Power. · Battery Level must be 20% or higher in order for the device to run normally. · If battery drops to 20% or below, the AC charger is required.

Verify HTC Charger is being used. · Only the AC charger, Car charger, or USB data cable that came with the device should be used; others can damage the device and/or battery.

Check the USB port on the device. Are any of the PIN's bent or mashed (see the picture below for an example of what it may look like)? If so, this is the issue and the device will need to be repaired.
Bent USB Pins

Turn off accessories (BT, WiFi, etc) when not in use by going to Start>Settings>Connections Tab>Comm Manager. · Accessories can drain the battery quickly

Remove the battery and inspect the contacts. Remove any debris/residue found on the device or battery contacts with a soft, dry cloth.
Try charging the device: Plug in USB to device and PC; what color is the LED? Plug in AC Charger to device and outlet; what color is the LED?
LED indicators:
Orange=Charging
Green=Device is fully charged
Red=Battery completely drained.
None=Charger not detected, perform a reset with the charger attached, try another charger/battery.
NOTE: If the battery is completely drained, the LED will be Red for a few minutes and then turn Orange. Once the LED turns Orange, the device should then be able to power up. If the device shows charging with one (AC Charger or USB) and not the other, the issue is likely with the accessory rather than the device. If the device will only power up when attached to the charger (AC or USB) it is likely that the battery needs to be replaced. If the device will not power on with or without a charger attached, perform a Soft Reset by inserting the stylus into the Reset hole located on the bottom of the device:

If the unit still wont power on, perform a Hard Reset on the device. Note: Since the device won’t power on, it will not be possible to back up the data before the reset; all data will be lost. The Hard Reset should be completed before the device is considered for an exchange. To perform a Hard Reset, press and hold the left and right soft keys while performing a Soft Reset:

If the Hard Reset has been done correctly, you will see the following:

If the device powers up after the Hard Reset, test the unit for a few days and if the issue returns, then the device should be considered for an exchange.

Anonymous 8525 Device Not Charging / Won't connect via USB 6 Jul 12 2008, 11:45 AM EDT by Anonymous

This is my third 8525 in less than a year and it is doing the same thing as the last phone. They get to a point where the USB / Charging connections don't work. I don't know if this is external physical damage, internal physical damage or software related. I think that the last phone began going down when I plugged in non HTC USB cables. I avoided all non HTC cables on this phone and may have lapsed once or twice. I just don't see how a product can accept a cable and then be damaged by that. The cables all look the same and a mistake can too easily occur, if I am correct and the third party cables are the culpret.
Anyone have any comments on what is going on? Is a current frying the internals due to the 11 pin set up? Can I fix this problem in any way without sending back to ATT?

I bought this phone refurbished in Dec 2007, and I have been having problems with it ever since. From the beginning, within 4 hours from removing from the charger (even if hardly used), the battery would go from 100% to warning me that I better plug it in (sometimes even less time) I don't know why previous Google searches didn't pull up this Wiki! I tried all of the suggestions indicated in other forums and such to no avail. Phone actually got worse in the last few weeks, and I was told by AT&T that there was NO WAY they could even extend my warranty period 2 weeks. Their only suggestions involved me spending more money. I was shocked after finding this Wiki that they didn't even suggest a hard reset of the device, and I wonder if their tech support even knows of such a thing (at least it is not in any of the documentation that came with the phone). I am rather technically inclined, and I already figured out the soft reset. I also tried draining the battery all the way and charging up, swapped out the battery with another phone of the same model that another family member had, tried disabling services I did not need, etc. I was so mad when I got off the phone with AT&T, and they tried to tell me that I would have to pay full price for another phone, because I no longer qualified for the upgrade price because I upgraded with this phone 3 1/2 months ago! I performed your tests here this morning and purchased a new charger, suspecting an issue with my current charger. I reset at 11:00 a.m., and the battery that would only register at 10% immediately went up to 40%! I put it on the new charger, and when I went back to it several hours later, it was at 100%. It has been off of the charger for 4 hours now, and the battery life still registers very high, even after all the texting I've been doing! And to think, AT&T this morning tried to get me to spend another $100+ on another phone! Thank you!!!
