Sprite Back Up UtilityThis is a featured page

Sprite Backup Utility The Sprite Back Up Utility version 5.1.0.(Build 1449) is included in the Windows Mobile 6 build for the AT&T Tilt . Sprite offiers an update for HTC devices that came pre-installed with Sprite back up; details can be found here.
The Sprite Back Up utility allows you to back up the entire device, not just the PIM’s as seen with Activesync and Windows Mobile Device Center. The back up file can be saved to the device or storage card for later retrieval. Note: It is recommended that the back up file be stored somewhere other than the device so it is not lost during a Hard Reset/Cold Boot. Also, if you have Storage Card Encryption enabled, you will need to disable it prior to using Sprite Back Up. See Storage Card Encryption.

There are 2 modes for the Sprite Backup Utility:
Basic Mode: The utility is set to Basic Mode by default. The only options in this mode are Backup Now and Restore Now.
Advanced Mode: This Mode allows the user to select what is going to be backed up (user can select folders).

Performing a Back Up
  1. On the device, go to Start>Programs>Tools>Sprite Back up.
  2. Go to Advanced Mode by going to Menu>Switch to Advanced Mode.
  3. Select what folders are to be backed up.
  4. Name the back up file by tapping on the ellipsis. Note: Default file name is the date that the back up is run.
  5. Choose where the backup file is to be stored. Note: If there is no storage card installed, the only option is to store the file in My Documents.
  6. Tap OK.
  7. Tap Back Up.
  8. Choose and confirm a password to be used for the back up file.
  9. Tap OK
  10. The device will prompt for a reset and then begin the back up process. The back up process cant take a few minutes depending on how much data is on the device.
  11. The user will see the progress of the back up on the display of the device.
Note: The user can cancel the back up at any time by tapping the Cancel Button Once the Back up is complete, the device will again reset.

Restoring the device using the Backup file created using Sprite Back Up.

  1. Go to Start>Programs>Tools>Sprite Back Up.
  2. Tap on the Restore tab.
  3. Enter in the password selected during back up.
  4. Tap OK.
  5. Tap Restore.
  6. Tap OK in the device reset prompt.
  7. Once the device reboots the restore process begins and the user will see a progress screen.
  8. Once the Restore process has completed, the device will again reset itself.

mark.lawler Don't turn on SD Card encryption! 3 Jul 16 2008, 12:01 PM EDT by aikosol

If you are backing up to your SD Card, make sure encryption is turned off. I made the mistake of encrypting my SD Card and when I had to reflash the ROM on my AT&T Tilt phone guess what? The backup on my SD Card was worthless as the file was inaccessable and couldn't be decrypted. Backing up to an SD Card is a great feature, I just wished the Sprite Back Up program had warned me about this issue about never being able to successfully restore if something had happened to my phone or it's ROM.
